Peggy Baker-Brett

d. May 10, 2021

Peggy Baker Brett was born to Isabel and John Baker on July 13, 1948 in Seattle, Washington. She was the middle sister to Colleen Plaisance and Deborah Dubuc. Her dad was in the army and they lived all over but went to rest and play in Buras, Louisiana where her grandfather owned orange orchards and her uncles were shrimpers. Her family eventually took up residence in Kenner, Louisiana on Kansas street. She was a member of the first graduation class at Chapelle. She loved and played cabbage ball and was on the Speech team throughout school. She attended Southeastern Louisiana University and became certified as a Social Studies and Speech teacher. At Southeastern, she learned to play guitar and sing. She was a camp counselor at Camp Abbey and was active in the civil Rights and charismatic movements. After college she was offered a contract to be a folk singer but chose to have a family instead. She took Gerard (Roddy) Michael Brett as her husband.

Her first teaching job was in St. John parish. She even rode the bus with the students because they only had one car. Peggy and Roddy had three children- Jennette (Jenny) Margaret Brett, Sarah Michelle Brett, and John Gerard Brett. They lived in various places but eventually came to reside in Covington, Louisiana. She taught at Mandeville Junior High, Greenbrier Hospital, Riverforest Academy later known as Kehoe France, Slidell High, and eventually retired from Salmen. She loved teaching and she loved all of her students!

She was a Girl scout Leader and Queen of the campfire sing along. Peggy was active at Our Lady of the Lake and started the very first Adoration Chapel on the Northshore.

Peggy was a lifelong encourager and never met a stranger. From the Pj’s to the Rouses to whatever and whenever, she made friends.  She is survived by her sister Colleen Plaisance, her children Jenny and John, and her grandchildren Zoe Isabel Killeen, Margaret (Maggie) Marion Killeen, Marie Claire Louise Killeen, and Lola Elizabeth Killeen who were and will be her pride and joy from her special post at heaven’s gate.  Unfortunately, she was unable to know her grandson Noah Hasha but prayed for and loved him.
