William Dewey Logan, Jr., 98, of Covington, LA, died peacefully at Sage Lake Senior Living on January 28, 2026. W.D. or “Dub” was born in Ecru, MS on March 20, 1927, the only child of W.D. Logan, Sr. and Gladys Velma Huskison Logan. Dub grew up in Carthage, MS. He attended Mississippi State University in 1943 and pledged Kappa Sigma fraternity, but enlisted in the Navy on his 18 th birthday. He served in San Francisco, CA attached to the US Marines as a corpsman, performing medical discharge exams for troops returning from duty in the Pacific Theater. After WWII ended, Dub returned to MSU, graduated with a Bachelor of Science, and married Beatrice Brisbane of Magnolia, MS in 1949. The newlyweds moved to Atlanta, GA, where Dub attended medical school at Emory University. He stayed at Emory as a resident under his mentor Dr. Osler Abbott. Dub formed the OAR Society for fellow Abbott residents who wore tie tacks shaped like boat oars to show that they were proud “Osler Abbott Residents”.

To augment his medical studies, Dub spent a year at Duke University medical school followed by a fellowship at Guy’s Hospital in London, England (1957-1958). Then he returned to Emory as a full professor of surgery, specializing in cardio thoracic surgery as one of the pioneers in this new field of treating patients with critical heart and lung problems. In 1971, Dub volunteered for 3 months aboard the SS HOPE while it was docked in Jamaica. He also found time to volunteer as the Lakeside High School football team’s on-field doctor. Around 1980, he founded the first private heart surgery program in Atlanta at Georgia Baptist Hospital in association with the Atlanta Heart and Lung Clinic, his private practice. Dub served as Chief of Staff at Georgia Baptist and was actively involved in organized medicine, serving many years as a Delegate to the American Medical Association. In the mid-1980s, he was elected President of the Georgia Medical Association. He was a board member of MAG Mutual, an innovative, non-profit insurance company which addressed the need for affordable medical malpractice insurance. (This Georgia program was subsequently copied by other states.) In the late 1980s, he researched and tested a possible treatment for HIV/AIDS, but the project was unsuccessful. In 1991, Dub and Bea moved to Carthage, MS, where he set up a general medical practice in conjunction with Leake Memorial Hospital.

Dub was an avid reader, stamp and coin collector, world traveler (often as a visiting professor of surgery), hunter (mostly deer and quail), and fisherman. Yearly summer vacations always included deep- sea fishing off the Florida coast. He enjoyed elaborate hunting and fishing trips with his son and occasionally his sons-in-law to Wyoming, NY State, Montana, Florida, Argentina, Belize, and other sporting destinations. Dub enjoyed music and could really jitterbug. He loved the performing arts and was a board member of The Atlanta Ballet for years.

Dub was predeceased by his parents and three loving wives: Bea (m. 1949-1993), Patsy Dowell (m. 1994-2013), and Jimmie Lou Jackson Graham (m. 2016-2019). “Grandy” will be greatly missed by his three children: Melissa Daubert (Bill), Rebecca Thore (Chris), and John Logan (Missy); nine grandchildren: John (Gabrielle), David (Rhya), Michael (Megan), and Sarah Daubert, Cathleen Jones (Matt), Caroline Engram (Hewitt), and Logan Thore (Jess), and Micah and Annabelle Logan; and 21 great- grandchildren: six in Pennsylvania (John), seven in Virginia (David and Michael), three in North Carolina (Cathleen) and five in Atlanta (Caroline and Logan). In addition, Dub is survived by his first cousin, Neal Huskison (Virginia). During recent visits, Dub would say how grateful he was to the Lord for his many blessings: family and life experiences.

There will be a graveside service at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA in April. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Samaritan’s Purse, Mercy Ships or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Bagnell & Son Funeral Home in Covington, LA.
