Dr. Steve Taylor, a distinguished professor and psychiatrist, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on June 13, 2026, in the arms of his loving family. His journey was marked by a lifetime dedicated to service and education.
As a youth, he excelled as an Eagle Scout, lifeguard, and Baptist missionary in Hawaii. Despite battling childhood asthma, Steve showcased his athletic prowess as the quarterback for Crowley High's championship football team and as a member of the track and debate teams.
After a significant head injury during medical school, Steve took a detour to work with the NFL in New York, contributing to the league's history before returning to his passion for medicine. In recognition of his service, the league honored him with a gold stethoscope.
Steve's education included a Bachelor of Science from LSU Baton Rouge in 1962, a graduate degree from LSU Medical in 1976, and a groundbreaking residency in Psychiatry by 1979. He further enriched his expertise with semesters at Yale and achieved Board Certification in Psychiatry in 1981, alongside certifications in end-of-life care and medical acupuncture.
His contributions to psychiatry were recognized through the Ginsberg Fellowship at The Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. Steve served as a Clinical Associate Professor at LSU and Consulting Psychiatrist at SLU Counseling Center. He was active with the American Psychiatric Association and the Louisiana Psychiatric Association, imparting knowledge through NIH Teaching Grants and courses at LSU and Yale.
Steve embraced a spiritual journey transitioning from a Baptist upbringing to Catholicism, eventually becoming an Oblate of Saint Benedict. He will be dearly missed, leaving a legacy of kindness and wisdom.
Survived by his wife, Marilyn (Lyn) Taylor, step-son Will Murray (Catherine), step-daughter Jane Hill Foster, sister Judy Taylor Cassell, and step-grandchildren Emma Jane Foster and Luke Foster. He is reunited with his late parents, Homer and Ruby Taylor.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a Mass at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery 75376 River Road, Saint Benedict, Louisiana. Burial will follow in the Saint Joseph Abbey Cemetery.
