Raynord Cornelius, Jr., affectionately known as Ray, “Cookie,” and “Big Brother,” was born on August 26, 1957, to Raynord Cornelius, Sr., and Melvina Batieste. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ray lived a rich and meaningful life shaped by military service, music, athletics, faith, family, and a lifelong love of learning.
An Air Force veteran, Ray attended Loyola University and pursued a variety of careers throughout his adult life, including serving as a New Orleans police officer. In his youth, he was a determined and accomplished boxer who won many of his fights. He was also a gifted singer and gained recognition by winning singing talent shows. Whether in the boxing ring or on the stage, Ray displayed confidence, discipline, and natural talent—qualities that reflected his strength, determination, and distinctive spirit.
Ray was an exceptionally intelligent man with an insatiable curiosity about the world around him. He read widely and explored subjects ranging from history and culture to people and places across the globe. There were few topics he could not discuss with thoughtfulness and insight. His broad knowledge, sharp mind, and genuine interest in others made him a memorable and engaging conversationalist. Family and friends will forever treasure the many conversations they shared with him, along with the wisdom, humor, and perspective he brought to each one.
After living in Utah for 20 years, Ray returned home to Louisiana in 2025. That same year, he reaffirmed his faith through baptism at Pear Ridge Church of Christ. His faith became a meaningful part of his journey, offering renewed strength, peace, and hope. He also found comfort and joy in life’s simple pleasures, including old-school music, classic boxing matches, fishing, and reading.
Ray deeply loved being “Big Brother” to his sisters and his late brother, Samuel Cornelius. He embraced that role with pride, affection, and a protective heart. Being their brother was not merely a title; it was a cherished part of his identity and one of the ways he expressed his love for his family. His presence, guidance, and unmistakable personality will remain treasured parts of their lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raynord Cornelius, Sr., and Melvina Batieste, and his brother, Samuel Cornelius.
Ray leaves to cherish his memory his son, Raynord James; his grandson, Raynord James, Jr.; his great-grandson, Cypher James; and his sisters, Dr. Vivian E. Cornelius, Adrian B. McDonald (Lorenzo), and Monique Dominick (Robert). He also leaves loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him deeply and carry his memory in their hearts.
Ray will be remembered for his brilliant mind, many talents, love of music and learning, gift for conversation, and the warmth and individuality he brought to every relationship. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons imparted, the laughter he inspired, and the love he gave so freely to those who knew him. Above all, Ray will be remembered as a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, veteran, and friend whose life touched many people in lasting ways.
