Obituary

Myrna Johnson Buras, 81 of Covington, LA, died peacefully at home on June 18, 2026, surrounded by her husband and children.

Born May 31, 1945 in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Dorothy Johnson; her brother Larry Johnson and his wife Sandra; her aunt, Audrey Johnson; and her uncle, Herman “Joe Scott” Johnson.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Robert “Bob” Buras; her son Avery Buras of Gulfport, MS; her daughter Carla Buras Miley and husband John of Shreveport, LA; and her grandchildren Simon Buras and his wife Faith, Palmer Miley, Graham Miley, Matthew Miley, and Anna Miley.

Myrna is also survived by her much-loved nieces Cherie Johnson Hebert and husband Jimmy, and Jill Vallot Johnson and husband Chris, and nephew John “Johnny” Carroll Johnson and wife Tiffany, and great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Growing up in lower Plaquemines Parish as a daughter of a shrimper, Myrna learned early to love and appreciate the bounties of the water. She carried a love of fishing throughout her life, and her friends and family know how much joy it brought her. One of her favorite sayings was, “Some women shop, REEL women fish.” Among her most treasured memories were spending Thanksgiving with her children and grandchildren in Empire, LA, staying at her nephew’s camp enjoying fishing, her homemade lasagna, and chargrilled oysters.

Myrna met the love of her life, Bob Buras, in Buras, Louisiana. After they married on July 18, 1964, she accompanied him to New Orleans while he completed his degree at Tulane University. Throughout their life together, they were an example to their children, grandchildren, family, and friends of true commitment and love. In later years, they cared faithfully for one another through sickness and in health, with Bob fully devoting himself to caring for Myrna at home until her death.

Myrna will be remembered for the care she took in preparing her family's favorite meals especially stuffed artichoke, lasagna and bread pudding; for her love of a good game of Bourrée; for dancing around the piano while her beloved brother played Fats Domino; for her contagious laugh watching her favorite sitcoms; for the passion she showed while watching her son play basketball; for attending every one of her daughter’s dance recitals; and her ability to catch a redfish when everyone else’s line was empty.

Myrna’s Catholic Faith was demonstrated in practical life by her dedication to helping the church. In her early life, she was dedicated to St Joseph’s Parish in Gretna, LA and to the Salesian Order as a Cooperator. She was often found in her recliner listening to and praying the Rosary. Myrna cherished and maintained many friendships she made throughout her life, from her Buras High School friends, her Maplewood Subdivision Pokeno group, to the many friends she made at her final home in Covington. Her friends extend from Louisiana to Tampa, to North Carolina up to New York. She loved deeply and was loved dearly by all who knew her.

Services will be held at Mary Queen of Peace, 1501 W Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70471, on Thursday June 25, 2026. Visitation will be held from 10am-12pm, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. A private Interment Service will be held immediately following at St Joseph’s Abbey in Saint Benedict, LA.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that friends consider making a donation to Little Sister of the Poor in Mobile, AL or Metanoia in Zachary, LA.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Jonathan Mizrahi, MD, St Joseph’s Hospice Care, and Home Instead, for their loving care of Myrna in her final months.
