John Patrick Shinners, born June 30, 1953, in Appleton, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, in Covington, Louisiana. John’s journey through life was marked by steadfast dedication to family, a love for nature, and the quiet values of hard work and simplicity.
John’s early years in Wisconsin shaped his appreciation for the outdoors and the value of togetherness. He served his country with honor in the United States Military in 1972, a chapter in his life that spoke to his sense of duty and service. In 1978, John married his beloved wife Gail in Waveland, Mississippi, marking the beginning of a journey built on partnership, resilience, and deep affection.
John and Gail eventually made their home in Louisiana, where they raised their children and cultivated a life rich in memory and purpose. He devoted over thirty years of service to the Army Corps of Engineers, earning respect not only for his professional contributions but also for his unwavering integrity and commitment.
A man of simple pleasures, John found joy outdoors—whether fishing, enjoying the sounds of the birds, or losing himself in the tranquility of nature. His earlier years were filled with swimming, sports, and laughter among friends, all of whom recall him as fun-loving and kind. In the late 1970s, he traveled with his VW Van, embracing the spirit of adventure before settling down. Even as the world became more complex, John remained true to his core: a lover of books, tools, and the quiet moments that technology could never replace.
Summers and autumns in Wisconsin held a special place in John’s heart, where the seasons, family traditions, and natural beauty mirrored the cycles of his own cherished life. Above all, his greatest joy came from time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, whose laughter and love he treasured deeply.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Gail Shinners; his daughters, Katie James (Ralhston), Dasha Shinners, and Vonya Shinners; his son, Christopher Shinners(Anna); and his precious grandchildren: Jada James, Marley James, Kai James, Asia James, Addison Shinners, and John Shinners. He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Jo Krueck, Jimmy Shinners (Jane), Michael Shinners (Nancy), Tom Shinners, Patrick Shinners (Mary Beth), Barbie Shinners, Trisha Shiners (Desi), Kathy Hansen (Bill), Sarah Baietti (Nino), Annie Doli, and Jeannie Kelly (Joe).
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, James and Ruth Shinners, and his dear son, John Michael Shinners. Their memories remain an enduring part of his legacy.
John’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family and friends. His love, warmth, and gentle wisdom will be dearly missed, yet his spirit continues to inspire all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 6, 2026, at Deland Park, 901 Broughton Drive, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Family and friends are warmly invited to honor his memory and share stories of a life so well-lived.
As we bid farewell to John Patrick Shinners, we remember a remarkable individual whose legacy is one of love, humility, and contentment in the simple things. May his memory be a source of comfort and peace for all who knew him.
