John Bernard Karpa III, affectionately known as “Bernie” by friends and family, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 30, 2025 in Covington, La, at the age of 75.
Born on March 5th, 1950 in Michigan, and raised in Yorktown, Virginia, Bernie lived a life marked by quiet strength, deep generosity, and steady love. He attended Virginia Tech to study geology, and there, met his wife Barbara.
Bernie eventually made his home in Louisiana where he built his family and career. He became a pillar in his community and was the kind of person everyone knew they could count on—whether you needed help fixing something, a listening ear, or simply a good laugh. He had the gift of sacrificial giving.
Bernie loved being outdoors and found joy in fishing, shooting, riding motorcycles, and maybe the occasional brew. Nature was his retreat, and he took comfort in its rhythm and peace.
He was also a father and mentor to many, and a best friend to those lucky enough to know him. His faith was strong and he showed unwavering dedication to his home church.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Karpa; his son, Joshua Karpa; and his brother, Stephen Karpa.
He is survived by his two sons, Geoff (Anne) and Sean (Chelsy) ; his sisters, Mary Lou and Julie; and three grandchildren, Amelia, Eleanor, and James.
Bernie’s legacy is one of quiet service, steady love, and deep integrity. His presence will be deeply missed, but the mark he left on the lives of those who knew him will never fade.
