Obituary

Joan Claire Cramer passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026. She is survived by her son John Anthony Cramer III and daughter Caitlin Michael. Her grandchildren are Wariya Zimmer, Eric and Keith Cramer, Nicole Franklin and Jake Michael and great grandchildren Olivia and Jacob Zimmer and Cooper Franklin. She was born in Independence Kansas on October 7, 1935 to parents John and Erma Grotenhuis and had three siblings: Arnold, Iris, and Jack. She graduated from Independence High School in 1953 and from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with an emphasis on Speech and Hearing in 1957. She married John Cramer Jr. in 1956 and during her marriage practiced as a speech and hearing therapist at Southeast Hospital and St Tammany Public Schools. Joni was socially active throughout school and college in clubs, theater, and leadership societies and, during her marriage, the Pontchartrain Yacht Club. Joan was known for being well read, informed, intelligent, and engaged in all facets of life and current events. Joan was a good conversationalist and was appreciated for her many clever puns. John was a Navy pilot and an Exxon geologist, and Joan enjoyed two memorable years in Japan along with many trips during their 66-year marriage. Joan and John were both rockhounds with fun stories about their collecting adventures and the unique rocks along the way. Known to her grandchildren and later great grandchildren as simply “Jojo”, she was a steady source of comfort, patience, and guidance. The kids all knew that if you couldn’t find Jojo reading or doing her daily crosswords on her spot on the couch, then she was outside in her garden tending to her flowers. Jojo loved the New Yorker magazine, her cats, and her dramas and mysteries both in text and television, usually with a cigarette in hand. Although she was small in stature, Joni’s strength, clever wit, and loving patience of others made her presence immense. Her legacy is profound, her life well lived, and her friends and family will miss her calming nature and witty humor.
