James Milton Matthews, age 86, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, in Covington, Louisiana. He was born on May 20, 1939, in Luverne, Alabama.
James proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of First Sergeant. A dedicated medical specialist, he also served as a Ranger with the 82nd Airborne Division. His courage and commitment were recognized with numerous honors, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His military service was a source of great pride and a defining chapter of his life.
Beyond his distinguished military career, James was a man of many talents and passions. He was a gifted singer and songwriter who found joy in music. He loved the open road on his motorcycle and cherished time spent fishing, embracing the peace and freedom of the outdoors.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Ann Matthews; his mother, Martha Eloise Borom; and his stepfather, Gerald Borom.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Dawn Barbento Blanchard; his sister, Martha Borom Dickey (Kenneth); his brothers, Pat Borom, Lewis Borom, and William Borom; and his cherished grandchildren, Mandolin, Max, and Maerek Barberito. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, resilience, love, and devotion to family and country.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at Biloxi National Cemetery on February 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
