James Dillard Jernigan, known affectionately to many as Jimmy James, passed away on December 9, 2025, in Covington, Louisiana, at the age of 80. He was born on February 3, 1945, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Jimmy James was a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), and the Department of Veterans Affairs. His commitment to service and recovery was evident to all who knew him. Recently, he celebrated 37 years of sobriety, a testament to his strength and the support he found through his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, along with the love of his family and close friends in the A.A. program.
As a Vietnam veteran, Jimmy endured a challenging start in life but emerged with resilience and a positive spirit. He cared deeply for his family, including his three beautiful children: Jason Jernigan, Alicia Jernigan, and Matt Selph, along with his seven grandchildren, who all brought him immense joy.
Jimmy had a talent for painting and dedicated himself to his craft as a professional painter. He loved riding his Harley Davidson and cherished moments spent outdoors fishing or simply enjoying life. He took pleasure in dining out and attending A.A. meetings, filling his days with the things he loved.
James Dillard Jernigan reunites now with his departed family members: his parents, James D. Jernigan and Stella Moore Jernigan; his sisters, Dorothy Jones, Linda Tell, and Mary Jenkins; and his brothers, Harvey Jernigan and Hulie Jernigan.
Jimmy James leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and community, remembered by all as a man with a heart of gold. His spirit and kindness will no doubt remain with those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honor of James family and friends are welcome to attend a visitation on Saturday December 20, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. in The Chapel of Bagnell & Son Funeral Home 75212 Hwy 437 Covington, Louisiana 70435.
