Hans Joachim Albert, of Mandeville, Louisiana, passed peacefully at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at the age of 79.  He was surrounded by his loving family.

Hans was born in Quedlinburg, Germany on September 2, 1941 to Günter and Elisabeth Albert.  After immigrating to the United States in 1961, he lived in New York City and worked on the Chrysler Building as a welder.  His desire to be an aviator drew him to enlist in the United States Army where he flew helicopters and attained the rank of warrant officer.  Hans served in Vietnam from 1962-1969 and received several awards, most notably the Purple Heart distinction for bravery. Hans became a proud United States citizen in Montgomery, Alabama in 1969.

After his military service, Hans worked as a commercial helicopter pilot flying locally and abroad.  In the 1980s, he completed the Penn State Executive Program and began an exciting career as an international corporate executive in the helicopter industry. Hans retired after almost 50 rewarding years in the field.

Hans is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Carl Schafer.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 29 years, Virginia Faith Albert, his children, Anya Lucas (Tyger), Max Albert, Katie Cordes (Brett), and Liz Hebert (Glenn), his loving grandchildren, Kara and Kona Lucas, Ava Albert, Kevin and Alyssa Cordes, Sage, Amelie and Alex Hebert, as well Ashleigh Lucas Civitello (Theo), Crystal Lucas Pike (Thomas) (great-grandchild, Tinley), Brandy Lucas, and Tyger Lucas, Jr.  He is also survived by his sister, Petra Schafer, Gretchen O’Neal, his former spouse and the mother of his children, his sister- in- law, Joyce Leece, brothers-in-law, Robert Stockstill (Sharon) and Niel Stockstill (Lavonne) and many nieces and nephews.

Hans traveled the world and had many fascinating incites to share.  His enthusiasm for sailing brought him to Lake Pontchartrain, where he made many wonderful friends and served as a past board of director for the Pontchartrain Yacht Club. Hans was a compassionate person with an endless curiosity and passion for knowledge.  Above all, his greatest love was spending time at home with his family and being a doting Opa.  He always took the time to hear about what was new with each person in his life, and he will truly be missed.
