Granville E. Mallard, Jr.

June 30, 1941 — September 1, 2025

Slidell, Louisiana

Granville E. Mallard, Jr., affectionately known as Gene, was born on June 30, 1941, in Austin, Texas. He passed away on September 1, 2025, in Picayune, Mississippi, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy, and dedication to his community and family.

Gene had a great passion for teaching and found immense joy in being a substitute teacher for his Sunday School Class. His favorite Bible passage, the 23rd Psalm, reflects his deep faith and unwavering strength. His dedication to education and his faith was further evident as he was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Slidell, where he connected deeply with others in the Truth Seekers Class. He was also a proud member of the Victoria Sailors and the TWOT Motorcycle Group.

His time at the University of Texas played a significant role in shaping his life, where he gained not only an education but also cherished friendships that would last a lifetime. Gene was a man of many interests, and he wholeheartedly embraced life, finding joy in a multitude of activities. He played nearly every sport, with particular fondness for golf, motorcycling, and fishing. Additionally, he possessed a talent for woodworking, crafting several boats—one of which he enjoyed racing. Gene was an avid gardener who took pride in nurturing plants and flowers. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively, including a remarkable journey that circled the globe.

Throughout the challenges he faced during his 23-month battle after back surgery, Gene maintained a positive outlook, greeting visitors with a smile and a joke. He found comfort and companionship in his dogs, especially Paddington, who stood by his side during his surgeries, ER visits, and nursing home stays.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Candice Mallard, and their children: Kimberly McCann and her husband Scott of Austin, TX; Granville Mallard, III of Austin, TX; Christopher Gilbert and his wife Karen of Mobile, AL; and Michael Combs of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by his siblings, James Mallard of Ft. Worth, TX, and Anthony Mallard of Austin, TX. Gene's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Zachary Mallard of Austin, TX; Katie McCann of Austin, TX; Emily Gilbert of New Orleans, LA; Henry Gilbert of Nashville, TN; Luke Combs of Denver, CO; and Madeline Combs of Denver, CO.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Granville Mallard Sr., and his mother, Eleanor Mallard. He is remembered as a man who loved the Lord, his family, and friends, bringing joy to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
