George Dewey
Smith
Dec 30, 1945 — Oct 30, 2026
Ponchatoula
George Dewey Smith III passed away on October 30, 2026, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, at the age of 80. He was born on December 30, 1945, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
George lived a life marked by loyalty, service, and the simple joys that brought him happiness. He attended the University of Dayton and later served his country as a Marine in the Vietnam War. That service remained a meaningful part of his life and reflected the strength and dedication that those who knew him recognized so well in him.
He also found great enjoyment in the things he loved most. George loved baseball, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates. He enjoyed horse racing, taking trips, and cheering on the New Saints. These interests brought fun, conversation, and many shared memories with the people around him.
Above all, George will be remembered for the love he gave to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Smith. He also leaves behind his daughter, Robin Cappetto, and Robin’s husband, Richard; his son, George Dewey Smith IV, and George’s wife, Vanessa; his stepdaughters, Courtney Pace and her husband, Roger, and Jenna Hitchcock and her significant other, Jarrod; and his stepson, Matt Hitchcock and his wife, Elaina. He was also a proud grandfather to Anthony, John, Marino, Paloma, Alex, Josie, Olivia, Makayla, Abigail, Madison, Hank, and his dog and faithful companion Beau.
George is also survived by his siblings, Terry Zablocki, Lynn Orlando, David Smith, and Paul Smith. He was preceded in death by his father, George Smith, and his mother, Carolyn Gilardi.
Those who knew George will remember a man who carried deep pride in his family, gratitude for life’s pleasures, and a steady spirit through the years. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him and in the many moments, traditions, and stories they will continue to share.
Per Mr. George's request, there will be no services held.
