Covington

Capt. Francis (František) Hruška

Francis Hruška died peacefully in his home in Covington, Louisiana, on April 21, 2026, with his daughter at his side. He was 91 years old.

Francis was preceded in death by his cherished “first wife” Ludmila, his parents, and his sister. He is survived by his children Zuzana Hruška, Daniela Davis (Robert), and Martin Hruška (Colleen). Francis is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Braden, Evan (Lauren) and Colin Davis, Kathryn Petersen (Adam), Maria, Margaret and Kristina Hruška, and Rikku Petersen. He also leaves behind sister Magdalena Valova (Pavol) and two nieces, Mirka and Martina, and their families in his country of birth, Slovakia.

Inspired by the explorer Roald Amundsen, Francis knew at the tender age of 12 that he wanted to be a sea captain. At fifteen, he left home to follow his lofty dream. Always an overachiever, Francis completed a 5-year maritime academy in Poland in 3 years and earned his Master Mariner license at the age of 27. Part of his training as a navigator took place on Dar Pomorza, one of the tall ships that later sailed into New York Harbour for America’s bicentennial celebration in 1976.

After sailing around the world a number of years and realizing a sailor’s life did not provide a stable foundation for raising a family, Francis took the opportunity to move his family to Africa where he was a ship pilot and later the Harbour Master. He trained pilots and established a training program which prepared local candidates for maritime schools overseas, and subsequent pilot training upon their return.

God’s providence brought Francis and his family to the United States, where, after working as a marine surveyor, he established himself in his new home country by starting a marine surveying company.

He was a loyal, patriotic, generous and kind man who loved God and his family. Above all, Francis had a deep devotion to Jesus and Mary, which he instilled in his children. He adored his wife, and their love story lasted until her death four years ago. He was also very proud of all of his children and grandchildren and all their accomplishments. Francis was respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him professionally and personally. He will be greatly missed.
