Beverly (Liz) LaFrance Salles

Elizabeth “Liz” LaFrance Salles, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2023 in Covington, LA, 20 days short of her 85th birthday, surrounded by her family. Elizabeth was born in Brownsville, TX to the late Charles Evans McCarty and Myrtle Boyd McCarty, and grew up in Wichita Falls, TX. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX.

Elizabeth married Leo LaFrance, an Air Force Captain based in Wichita Falls, and moved to Duluth, Minnesota until Leo’s untimely death in 1965. Liz made her way to Louisiana, via New Orleans, before settling in Covington, her home now for over 50 years. In Covington, she met and married the recently deceased Warren Salles, Jr. 

Liz was a well-known member of the business and civic community in Covington. She opened her beloved business, The Jefferson House, in 1973, which remains open to this day.  She was very active in the community and was proud of starting one of the first Farmers & Artists markets in the area.

Elizabeth is survived by her two children, Michael LaFrance and Elise LaFrance Schell (Paul), her six grandchildren, Alex Schell Higgins (Gary), Lauren Schell (Sean), Ashley LaFrance, Anna LaFrance, Elizabeth Schell, and Catherine LaFrance, her great-grandchildren, Amelia and Henry Higgins, and her brother James Robert McCarty. She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Gerald McCarty. Liz was also survived by her caretaker and friend, Dee Himes. 

Elizabeth was well-loved by her friends and community, and her kind and generous spirit will be deeply missed. The funeral will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church in Covington, LA, on March 31st, with the visitation beginning at 10:30am, followed by Mass at 11:30am. After the Mass, there will be a celebration of life reception at The Jefferson House. May she rest in peace
