James Sortor

James Berkley Sortor, Sr., age 79, died peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, February 11, 2017.  He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Ella Hulin Sortor.  James was born in Kansas City, Missouri  to the late Vorhies Sortor and Clare Schwartz Sortor.  James was a long time resident of St. Tammany Parish (Slidell and Mandeville).  James was preceded in death by his sister Judith Sortor Roe, brother-in-law Claude Roe, son James “Jimmy” B. Sortor, Jr., nephew Eric Carter and great nephew Mike Roe.  James was affectionately known as Popi to family and friends.  He is survived by children Robert G. Falcon, Sr. (Adrail), Kevin M. Falcon (Charlotte), Karen F. Hanagriff (John) and nieces Lisa R. Fleming (Mark) and Laura R. Carter.  He is also survived by grandchildren Robert G. Falcon, Jr. (Christine), Summer F. Peyton (Earl), Lindsay F. Dow (Hutch), Joshua C. Falcon, Michelle H. Still (Kevin), Jason M. Hanagriff (Rebecca), eight great-grandchildren (Tyler Kinler, Taylor Peyton, Caroline Falcon, Mary Ella Dow, Charlotte Suzann Dow, Annabella Falcon, Isabel Still and Jase Hanagriff) and 3 great nieces (Moriah Carter, Eryn Fleming and Ashley Fleming) and great nephew Adam Roe.  James proudly served in the United States Navy. He worked a long career as a Merchant Marine for various companies and a security guard for Vinson Guard Services Inc.  He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman.  All who met him loved James.  He will be greatly missed.  The Sortor family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Manor of Mandeville and Hospice of St. Tammany Parish Hospital for the compassionate care they provided for James.  James will be laid to rest at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Committal Service on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Slidell, LA followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Covington Presbyterian Church 222 S. Jefferson Ave., Covington, LA  70433.
